Last week was very stressful for me with my mom’s accident and having to drive back and forth to the hospital which is 2 and a half hours away plus having company. But this week is a little bit more relaxing. I decided to pursue jewelry making because it seems to relax me. I have taken an hour course during a cruise on the Oasis of the Seas last year and then I just almost forgot all about it. Last weekend, there was a show here and lots of jewelry making supplies were on sale so I bought a lot. I called my friend and she bought some too, and then we met at the house a few days ago to start creating. There’s something oddly romantic about those Christmas tree sellers. For a few weeks they spend 12-hour days outside in the freezing cold, then go home with (presumably) a wad of cash. It’s kind of like spending a summer on an Alaskan fishing boat, without the risk of losing your hands. But is it really worth the time? Last year, Charles Poekel, one-half of the music blog Chocolate Bobka , decided to get into the racket. He volunteered at a stand last year to learn the ins and outs of the business. ��Most tree stands in New York are run by two or three people total and by people who have been doing it for many years,�� he explained. ��There was no way anyone would pay me for just one or two shifts, so I did it for free. I told them I was writing a book and wanted first-hand experience.��

Avon Products: An Overcorrection Creates an Opportunity
Avon Products ( AVP ), which I first wrote about on May 6, 2009 , at a price of $23.12, has pulled-back with the market’s retreat, but I still like the company and the stock. Here’s why: Avon remains the world leader in direct-marketed cosmetics, toiletries, fashion jewelry, and fragrances, with ample growth opportunities in Latin America, China, and Central/Eastern Europe. Further, I also like the fact that Avon’s restructuring, including increased supply chain efficiency, has cut costs, and also enhanced incentives for its sales force. The First Call FY2010/FY2011 EPS estimates for AVP are $2.04 to $2.39 . Technically, as noted, Avon’s stock has overcorrected , falling about 20% in the past two months. The break below the key, 50-day moving day average also is a concern. Still, the calculation here is that the stock’s sustained drop below the 50-day MA, and its failure to hold support at/near $30 are largely due to the Dow’s late January/early February swoon. Hence, I still view the shares as attractive.
